croatia
After some pretty comprehensive itineraries in Italy, France, Spain and Turkey we thought we should continue exploring the Southern European coast by heading for Croatia.
This was a fascinating route. Starting in Zagreb, the Croatian interior felt like an extension of Northern European or perhaps Hapsburg culture. As we moved into Istria and followed the coast south these areas rather felt more heavily influenced by their history as a Roman and then Italian possession.
We island hopped to Hvar and spent a wonderful few days rambling around the ancient Stari Grad plain, which feels like it’s been farmed unchanged since a time before time.
Highlight of the trip was a seemingly innocent walk in the Paklenica National Park, which thanks to a combination of enthusiasm and sketchy navigation became a 22km cross-country epic.
